Teeth Cleaning in San Clemente

A professional clean reaches what brushing at home cannot.

Plaque hardens into tartar, and once it does, no toothbrush will shift it. A hygiene appointment removes it, lifts surface staining, and leaves the teeth smooth enough to slow it coming back.

About Cleaning

What a hygiene appointment involves

A cleaning is a methodical piece of work rather than a quick polish. The hygienist starts with your oral health and medical history, then works around the mouth removing what has built up above and below the gumline, finishing with a polish that leaves less for plaque to cling to.

The Appointment

How a cleaning runs

Each stage has a purpose, and you can ask the hygienist to pause at any point.

  • Evaluation Your oral health and medical history are reviewed before anything begins.
  • Plaque and tartar removal Specialized instruments lift hardened deposits, including the hard-to-reach areas.
  • Surface stain removal A thorough clean that brings back the natural color of the teeth.
  • Interdental cleaning Floss and interdental tools clear debris from between the teeth and along the gumline.
  • Polishing A final polish leaves a smooth surface, which slows plaque returning.
Why It Matters

What regular cleaning protects

The point of a hygiene visit is not how the teeth look afterwards, welcome as that is. It is what does not happen in the years after.

  • Gum health Tartar at the gumline is what drives gum disease, and it can only be removed professionally.
  • Fewer surprises Problems are spotted while they are small, in the same appointment.
  • Fresher breath Removing the deposits that cause odor rather than covering it.
  • A smoother surface Polished enamel gives plaque less to hold on to between visits.
Deep Cleaning

When a deeper clean is needed

Where deposits have worked below the gumline and the gums have started to come away from the tooth, a routine clean is not enough. A deeper clean treats the root surfaces themselves. If that is what your mouth needs, we will explain why before anything is booked, and what the alternative would mean.

The short answer

A professional teeth cleaning is a hygiene appointment that removes plaque and hardened tartar from above and below the gumline, lifts surface staining, and polishes the teeth. Once plaque hardens into tartar it bonds to the tooth and brushing will not shift it, so it has to be removed with instruments designed for the job. The final polish leaves a smooth surface that slows plaque returning between visits.

Common Questions

Teeth Cleaning FAQ

How often should I have my teeth cleaned?

Most patients have their teeth cleaned every six months, though some need more frequent visits. The right interval depends on your own oral health, and we will tell you which applies to you rather than applying one interval to everyone. Regular visits matter because tartar at the gumline drives gum disease and can only be removed professionally.

Does a cleaning hurt?

A cleaning should not hurt. Tell the hygienist if anything is uncomfortable and they will adjust, and you can ask them to pause at any point. Working at your pace is part of the appointment, not an interruption to it.

Why can I not just remove tartar at home?

Tartar cannot be removed at home because, once plaque hardens, it bonds to the tooth and brushing will not lift it. It has to be removed with specialized instruments designed for the job, including in hard-to-reach areas. That is why a professional cleaning reaches what brushing at home cannot.

Will cleaning whiten my teeth?

A cleaning does not whiten teeth beyond their natural shade, but it does remove surface staining. Lifting that staining restores the natural color of the tooth, which many people find is most of what they wanted. Lightening a tooth beyond its natural shade is whitening, which is a separate treatment.

What is the difference between a cleaning and a deep cleaning?

A routine cleaning works at and just below the gumline, while a deep cleaning treats the root surfaces themselves. A deep clean is needed where deposits have worked further below the gumline and the gums have begun to come away from the tooth. If that is what your mouth needs, we will explain why before anything is booked.

Can my children have a cleaning?

Yes, children can have a cleaning. Routine hygiene visits are worth starting early, and they are usually the easiest appointment for a child to get used to. Starting early also means problems can be spotted while they are small.
